I just got an email about this from Banquet. It's not official is it?
It is via Sony so it's a legit release by the looks of it.
Compilation album. So time will tell
Well that feels a bit, final.
😥 This was my first thought.
It's not like we need a stopgap, we're used to big gaps between albums. Just a cash grab at this time wouldn't be a great idea either. I wonder if it's been planned for a while.
Hmm just got an email from Wax & Beans about it - feels quite final
Yeah I really didn't want to think it was a cash-in but the thought did cross my mind. I saw that the Greatest Hits re-entered the album charts around Wembley time and wondered if this might be a way of getting money for the charities (though I haven't seen anything to say that the proceeds are going to charity)?
Not sure if this is a final design but the cover looks a bit bootleg and homemade to me, like Photoshop 101. In my 20's I worked for a small back-catalogue record company and all our album covers were like this - same font and everything 😅
The Foo facebook page has tweeted out about it now... not twitter/instagram from what i've seen though
It certainly has a bit of a final feel. My gut keeps telling me that the band will continue, but I really don’t know (whatever decision they make will be completely understandable)
I would venture that this didn’t have a lot of direct input from the band though.
‘The Essential…’ is a Sony theme -all their big acts get one: Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, etc. And the design is always the same; a B&W pic, with a pretty standard font.
This screams ‘contractual obligation’ rather than ‘final release’.
I felt that from the strange wording of the FB post:
The Essential Foo Fighters is a collection pulled from their studio album discography including a selection of fan favorites and hit singles. Available October 28th. Pre-order here: https://FooFighters.lnk.to/EssentialFF
'their' studio album? Not 'our'? (The post-Wembley post said 'Thank you for joining us')
They've also announced Dream Widow for RSDBlack Friday https://DreamWidow.lnk.to/Vinyl
That supports the last point that this is pretty much all in the hands of the label imo. I don’t think the band is putting out the wal-mart compilation as their grand finale or anything, just the timing is interesting. Could just be they reached 25 and the label was just “well, time to do the thing”.
Yep - the post even reads like an automated, scheduled thing.
The lack of any unreleased material. Definitely gives the label rather than the band vibes
I'll Stick Around, Big Me ... both Essential!
Aurora too, but they get a pass on that one, as it was never a single.
And, if up to me, I'd include Something From Nothing, but guessing I'd be in the minority on that one. Also not sure if that was ever a single.
Legacy is the catalog division of Sony so they curate all the 'Essential' compilations - this doesn't give me 'personally selected by the band' vibes.
As the series has released collections for several active artists, there isn't really much to read into here, from what I can see, other than ticking a box on an agreement.
Ah, see! Sometimes you need the voice of reason 😁
‘Something From Nothing’ certainly was a single, it was the lead single and should be included here to represent Sonic Highways.
And it’s nuts they’ve not included ‘Run’ …..and many ‘Resolve’, ‘DOA’ and ‘Wheels’
This feel to me just exactly like a repeat of the Greatest Hits fiasco where the band possibly have a deal for so many albums and Sony are saying well wed like to put this out while you are in the news with the tribute gigs - seeing as you may or may not be doing anything else - any time soon - or ever.
The only band initiated reason for something like this is where a band has been out of the public eye for years and wants a little final cash in on nostalgia because they could use the money... which is totally laughable for FF
Selection / art / timing / purpose - all scream bullshit to me.
And if the band wanted to do something final in a retrospective it would have real concept forethought, artwork, would include stuff from the archives and would not make you feel you were buying something straight out of the bargain discount bin.
Agree on all counts ... make it a double album!
I'm certainly passing this up. Nothing new. Hideous artwork. All these "Essential" releases are worthless cash grabs by Sony. I'm guessing this is indeed obligatory. Too bad. Also feels a bit tasteless to me all thing considering
Big no no
Generally greatest hits albums aren't for the die-hards, they are for the casual fans. But since the 90s (80s?), bands have wised up, realizing that by adding a new track or two, they get all the die-hard fans to buy them too. It's surprising there are no new tracks.
I only bought the GH because it had Wheels on it!
I suspect this is all Sony with no band involvement what so ever.
I get why people would feel that way. If I were a betting man, I'd not be betting on that.
Thanks. I'm always hopeful.
How nice would it have been for the track list to go “Walk” then “Run”?
Alice in Chains' The Essential front cover is what it first reminded me of which is Sony as well of course.
