Hey.
Firstly thanks for setting up this forum - we LOVE you.
I know you don’t want to clog up the forum with a random thought thread, and I understand that 100%, but it really would be nice to have a place to just chat about anything without having to start a separate topic.
So with that in mind would it be possible to have a totally separate section where we can just chat? As a sub section in Foo Free. Maybe called Foo Social or something. Just one section where it’s just chat. You can’t add a topic but just add comments to the one thread. Confine random chat to just one place? Obviously no spam. Not that I ever spam.
What are your thoughts?

As I said in the other topic, whatever helps the forum thrive I'm down with. I'll think about what would be best.
There is one possibility I can have a look at, a kinda psuedo chat-room thing, where it's away on a separate page. As you can imagine I've got lots of things on the TODO list but I'll get to it, I promise.

if you could do a chat thingy it would be great - sometimes I just want to chat about nothing in particular...just catch up with people.

Instead of a chat, why not just start a thread?
Yeah, I'm with Soph on this. Obv if you just want to chat to one person in particular, PMing them is the smartest way to do so.
But the only way the forum generally stays alive is people posting new threads and talking in the ones that exist already. Almost every lengthy thread on the old board ended up deviating somewhat from the original intent. But anything that encourages people to stay in one area is likely to mean that they won't post more generally.
I like the chat idea
I get that more posts generates more interest but only if the posts are of interest themselves.
Sometimes I just want to say hi and see how people are doing but I don’t want to start a thread every time for that.
Having one dedicated ‘chat’ thread where people can just pop in and out to catch up with people on a social level was more my line of thought. If I want to talk about a specific topic I’d start a new thread for that topic.
Having lots of individual threads can be just as bad for a postboard - threads get ‘lost’ in the sea of other threads, you can end up with a load of pointless threads or several similar/repeat threads all of which can put people off.
Even with a chat type thread I still go to the main board and check out other threads, I don’t just hang out in the chat thread.
I'm just saying, the random thought thread, which is essentially what the chat thread is, was one of the main reasons the old board was so dead.
Sure, people might 'miss' things if there are too many threads, but I think it less likely than if there is just one random thread with no general aim but thousands of posts. Nobody is going to go back and look in there. It's much easier to see a thread called "Arsenal" and think there might be something of interest, than a thread just called "sports", for example.
But that's just my tuppence.

i didn't engage in ANY long chat threads (which is why I am not aware of all these stories people have been sharing for the last few weeks) throughout my time on the old board. I popped my head in here and there but couldn't keep up with it.
that spamming thread though...that was another beast altogether π³
